The Christian Writer's Why

Do you desire to write words for God’s glory? I’ve discovered that being a Christian writer is not like being any other kind of writer. As Christ-followers, our writing can be Spirit-led rather than flesh-driven. Through God’s power, promise, provision, and purpose—we can write words of light that reflect His love and truth with compassion—making a difference!

Here are two special passages of Scripture that I hope will encourage and inspire you as a Christian writer. The first verse is Psalm 45:1…

My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
— Psalm 45:1

Using the Strong’s concordance, we can dive deeper into the meaning of the words:

  • inditing” (H7370) ‘rahas’ - to gush, stir, boil over, overflow with.

  • matter” (H1697) ‘dabar’ - words, chronicles, book.

  • of the things I have made” (H4639) ‘maase’ - deed, thing done, work of God.

  • ready” (H4106) ‘mahir’ - quick, skilled, ready, diligent.

  • writer” (H5608) ‘sapar’ - to take account of, declare, reckon, tell, shew forth.

As Christian writers, we write because our hearts are overflowing with the wonderful works of God that we have experienced and witnessed in our own lives and in the lives of others. We are called to be skilled and diligent writers—taking account of, reckoning, declaring and shewing forth God’s glory—so that others will see Jesus high and lifted up!

The second verse is Isaiah 50:4…

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.
— Isaiah 50:4
  • hath given” (H5414) ‘natan’ - bestow, entrust, appoint.

  • the learned” (H3928) ‘limmud’ - discipled.

  • that I should know how” (H3045) ‘yada’ - learn to know, discern, be skillful in.

  • speak” (H5790) ‘ut’ - to aid, to help, to confirm with words.

  • a word in season” (H1697) ‘dabar’ - words, chronicles, book, counsel.

  • he wakeneth” (H5782) ‘ur’ - awaken, open the eyes, stir up, arise.

  • to hear” (H8085) ‘sama’ - have power to hear, understand, obey, publish.

As Christian writers, God daily entrusts us—as His discipled—with understanding to know how to help and encourage those who are weary. God wakes us up—morning by morning—to hear, understand, and obey!
